There are several businesses that are advertising under the locksmith
heading that are not true locksmiths. These companies have
individuals working for them that do not have the proper training to be
real locksmiths. They flood the Yellow Pages and Internet with
thousands of phony listings. Most claim to be local locksmiths
and some even put in fake addresses in the ad. These calls end up
going to a distant call center where they are dispatched
from. You are quoted a price and when the job is
done, the price is raised. A $29 car opening can be $129.
The person that comes out says that the original quote was just to come
out. The extra is for doing the job. Many times a simple
house lockout can be in the hundreds of dollars. You will be told
your lock cannot be picked and will have to be drilled. While
this does occasionally happen, it is rare that a "real"
locksmith would have to do this.
When selecting a locksmith, make sure they really are local.
Check the address they give you and make sure it is real. In one
of the phone books I received, there were 5 1/2 pages of locksmiths and
only 1/2 page was real locksmiths. All of the addresses of these
scammers were fake
and all of the calls for the "different companies" went to
the same place.
